Introduction of POSCO Pohang Iron & Steel Company (POSCO) was founded in 1968. PARK Tae-joon led the whole establishing process and became a first CEO of the company. It was due to the 'special' relationship with ex-president PARK. The money invested by the Korean government was provided by Japan and US as loans and grants. Compensation payment for colonial rule damages of Japan also invested as the construction expenses. At that time, there was no social infrastructure for the basic industries in Korea. For breaking away the title, 'the poorest country in the world', the government had prepared to implement '5-year Economic Development Plan'. The foundation of POSCO was the first step of the Korean government's plan to develop the country and foster heavy industries. The construction of the first manufacturing facilities and furnaces was completed in 1973 and the production was started. After 1970's, which was the most rapid growth period of Korean economy, POSCO also experienced enormous growth as well. Another epoch-making chance was a privatization. Before then, POSCO was a government-owned company. But because of financial crisis of Korea, the government started to sell its stock of POSCO as an expedient for introducing foreign capital. The privatization was complete in 2000 and a global professional management system was introduced.
